Navigating the Moisturizer
Maze
Moisturizers are like diet books there's a new one on the market every day. But don't be seduced by high priced, high tech products: All a moisturizer can do, says Dr. Fusco, is soften skin and moisturize. It cannot erase lines.
If you're dry, oil up. The drier your skin, the more hydrating elements your moisturizer should contain, says Dr. Fusco. So pick a product formulated with ingredients such as glycerin, hyaluronic acid, or dimethicone. Eucerin and Moisturel are two of many good choices, she says. They slow down natural moisture loss throughout the day and prevent further skin dehydration.
Or go the natural route. "Olive oil is a great moisturizer," says Dr. Jaliman. Of course, it's not for someone who is acne prone, and it's best used as a before bed treatment because olive oil can't protect your skin from the sun. (Plus, you'll smell like a Greek salad while you're at work.)
If you're oily, go light. Oily skin may feel dry, the result of harsh cleansing products formulated with ingredients such as alcohol that strip away the skin's natural oils, says Dr. Fusco. Try a moisturizer that contains humectants (ingredients that attract and hold water), such as glycerin and sodium PCA, she says. These ingredients trap water in your skin with no greasy
shine. Also, choose a lotion. Lotions are lighter than creams and tend to contain less oil, so they won't clog pores.
If you're sensitive, think basic. Use a hypoallergenic moisturizer, says Dr. Fusco. Apply it to a test area first to see if you tolerate it well. Pure glycerin (available at drugstores) or petroleum jelly can be effective, she adds, but you should avoid them if you're acne prone.
Consider eye creams. It's fine to use your regular moisturizer around your eyes. But if you have sensitive skin or your eyes are easily irritated, consider buying moisturizing eye cream, says Dr. Fusco. Creams made to be used specifically around the eyes are less likely to aggravate delicate undereye skin or your peepers themselves.
