Are AHA's Safe?

Yes AHA's in concentrations of 12% or less are safe and effective. However it is important to understand that skin care products containing AHAs are not simply moisturizers, they may actually affect the structure and function of the skin. It is for this reason that some would argue that AHA's should be classified as drugs and only be made available through a prescription from a doctor. If dryness and irritation do occur cut back the concentration of the AHA product or reduce the number of applications.

Concentrations greater than 13% could present problems if they are not monitored by a dermatologist. This is where concerns begin to arise with alpha hydroxy peels offered by estheticians. In some cases they are using peeling agents with a concentration of 30% or more. At these levels they are moving into the realm of a controlled chemical bum rather than an aggressive exfoliating agent.

Do not use products which have been sitting around and open for a long time.
