Men, and less so women, with male pattern hair loss or a strong family history of balding are cautioned about scarring. As balding progresses, a scalp scar will become more and more apparent because it is no longer hidden within the hair. A scalp incision often accelerates hair loss because of the tension of the scar and the subsequent interruption of the blood supply to the scalp. Other causes of hair loss in the region of the scar are infection and hematoma, both of which are rare. This is much less of a problem with the laser and endoscopic technique.

A dose of I milliliter (1/4 teaspoon) of minoxidil is applied to the bald area twice a day at 12 hour intervals for a total daily dose of 2 milliliters (1/2 teaspoon). Exceeding this dose will not necessarily make the hair grow faster nor in greater amounts. It may cause side effects, so it is important to take the recommended dose. Missing an application or two will not interfere with the progress of the treatment unless applications are missed regularly. if an application is missed, the dosage should not be increased to compensate.

Rogaine comes with three different applicators, each of which has a I milliliter measurement device. The pump spray tip applicator is used for applying minoxidil to large areas, while the extended spray tip applicator and the rub on applicator are for smaller areas of the scalp.
