Most of these problems clear up once therapy is discontinued. More serious side effects include abnormal bone changes in the spine, blurred vision, hair loss, and elevated blood lipid (fat) levels. Most of these side effects also disappear once Accutane therapy is discontinued. In the case of bone changes, however, the effects may be permanent. Dermatologists are in the best position to determine which individuals will most profit from Accutane therapy. People taking the drug require frequent follow-up visits to their doctor and periodic blood tests to both monitor their progress and look for adverse reactions.

Although acne may actually worsen during the first few weeks of Accutane therapy, significant improvement can usually be seen by the tenth to twelfth week. A full course of therapy usually lasts between sixteen and twenty weeks. If necessary, a second course of therapy may be given two months later.

Accutane Acne Treatment

Accutane (isotretinoin) is a potent oral vitamin A derivative. This drug may represent the single most significant advance to date in the treatment of severe, scarring cystic acne (Grade IV) of the face, chest, and back. Accutane has been shown to suppress oil-gland secretions, an effect that may last months after the drug has been discontinued. For many patients with severe, disfiguring cystic acne, for whom no other treatments have worked, Accutane has resulted in complete and longlasting clearing of the skin.

Unfortunately, Accutane is not right for everyone. It has been associated with a number of side effects. These most commonly include extremely dry skin and severely chapped lips. Other common side effects include occasional nosebleeds, gum soreness, body aches and pains, itching, peeling of the palms and soles, increased sensitivity to the sun, and increased sensitivity to contact lenses.
