Physical stresses on your body can also aggravate the acne condition. Having a cold, fever, sore throat, or allergy attack, for example, have all been associated with acne flare-ups. Premenstrual flare-ups are common, although some women experience acne breakouts during ovulation instead. In addition, certain medications used to treat epilepsy, tuberculosis, and emotional disorders may worsen a preexisting acne problem. So may the use of topical steroid creams. Interestingly, the birth control pill can worsen acne in some people but improve it in others.

Finally, oily liquids or thick creamy cosmetics are frequently acne-producing. The heavier the preparation, the more likely it is to contain acne-producing substances such as petroleum jelly, mineral oil, or lanolin derivatives. Greases of any kind, which may contaminate your skin, generally aggravate acne.

Causes of Acne
You have just learned that acne begins as a tendency to form plugs at or near the openings of your pores, setting off a chain of events below the skin surface that leads to the formation of pimples, pustules, and cysts. If you have ever suffered with acne, you have probably already observed that there are times when your skin seems to improve by itself and other times when it flares up. Unfortunately, not all the factors triggering acne flare-ups are known. However, it is well established that various kinds of physical and emotional stresses can cause acne to worsen.

Although nervous tension is not a cause of acne, it appears in many people to play a very important role in aggravating it. The pressure of midterm or final exams, a blind date, prom night, a fight with your boyfriend or girlfriend, an argument with your parents, or a death in the family are all examples of stressful situations that have been known to result in acne flareups. The acne will frequently improve once the emotionally stressful period has passed.
