Composite Tooth Bonding

Composite tooth bonding is another method of restoring the color of the teeth. The composite used is filling material composed of a resin or plastic like material. Bonding is the manner in which this material is adhered to the tooth.

A composite bonding comes in various shades which a skilled dentist is trained to match to the teeth thus providing the proper color and contour. For substantially discolored teeth, composite bonding may not be effective in masking the stain and still maintain a natural look, but for minor discolorations, it works well.

The following are the steps the dentist takes in composite bonding: * The correct color is selected to match the surrounding teeth.

The tooth is cleaned and the surface prepared with driIling. Since this preparation involves the surface of the tooth, local anesthetic is not necessary in most cases.

*The tooth is then "etched" with a mild acid to provide a surface to which the composite will bond.

*Mouldable composite filling material is used and a highintensity light is placed on the tooth for about 40 seconds to harden the composite.

*The composite is refined and polished.
