The knowledge of diet and nutrition has a direct bearing on the maintenance of sound health of an individual.Although food habits which are cultivated from the childhood vary according to different sociocultural groups, it is necessary for a child to have a scientific knowledge as regards the choice of foods, proper nutritional requirements, the functional importance of foods to the body and the conept of balanced diet. It is also necessary to know the nutritive values of different foods, so that one can choose the best foods according to one's needs. Nutritional intake
The basic diet patterns followed by our ancestors have been largely adquate as is evident form the very fact than man has in our country is also essential. The maintenance of good health by an individual will enable in turn to achieve the goal of making a healthy nation.
Survived for so many thousands of years. With the passing of time the population of the world has increased and the food production has fallen down. Majority of the world's population lives in poor countries in which food supply is not adequate. Most of the people in these countries either do not have enough to eat or do not eat the right kinds of food. More than half the deaths in these countries occur before the age of 5 6 years. As a result of poor nutrition, there is poor resistance to infection and greater incidence of diseases, which lead to death. Children who are undernourished or malnourished, when they do survive these diseases, do not grow satisfactorily. Such a child is not as tall or as heavy as, his well nourished counterpart
of the same age. Recently, it has been found that poor nutrition during early childhood interferes with the normal psychological development. Thus a poorly nourished child may fail to benefit from schooling.
