CARE FOR YOUR EYES

Your eyes are one of the most important features you have, so make the most of them. With just a little thought and care, you can have large, sparkling eyes that will express your feelings more easily and quickly than words. Make your eyes speak for you, but first, learn how to look after them.

Your eyes can be made more healthy and beautiful if you follow a few simple guidelines to care for your eyes and keep them healthy. (And this applies as much to men as it does to women.) This attention will not only increase the health of your eyes but also your general attractiveness. Healthy, lively eyes not only highlight your face but your whole personality as well. Dull, tired and uncared for eyes will detract from your overall attractiveness. So make a resolution to care for your eyes and guard their health.

To have healthy eyes is not just a matter of avoiding and treating certain things. Your eyes need everyday attention. You must actively exercise, bathe and look after your eyes frequently and consistently.

Diet Beauty really does start from the inside. What you eat is reflected in the condition of your hair, the texture of your skin and the lustre of your eyes. Keep your eyes bright and healthy by including plenty of eggs, cheese, milk, meat, fish, fresh fruit and vegetables in your diet. Vitamins A and B2 are particularly good for eye health. You will find these in milk, cream, eggs, carrots, spinach, kidney, liver, Brewer's yeast and fish.

Sleep Regular and uninterrupted sleep is essential, It helps rest the eye muscles and on average, most people like about eight hours. If you miss out on your sleep for a lengthy period, it results in red rimmed eyes, often bloodshot, and you'll have dark circles under the eyes. The only remedy is sleep but you can help disguise "bags" by using a pale undereye crearn in order to "lift out" shadows. The area immediately below the eye is very delicate and should never be pulled or stretched, so be very careful when applying such a cream. It's best to use a very light tapping movement in order to blend in the cream.

Eye massage Massaging the eye area helps the blood circulate and can be done at the same time as feeding the surrounding skin with a nourishing cream, The cream, or oil, will sink into the skin and plump out the skin's cells with moisture. This create's a smoother look to the skins surface and will help eliminate wrinkles

and fine lines that can often be seen at the corners of eyes. Remembering that the eye area is extremely delicate, only use the soft part of fingertips to massage. Start by running the third fingertip from your nose, under the browbone and in a circle round and underneath the eye, and back to the nose. Repeat this movement, using small, circular, rotating actions keeping them light and gentle.

Eye exercises Keep your eyes relaxed by rolling them around the socket. Start by looking straight ahead, roll upwards and then on round to the outer corner of the eye. Now look down and towards the nose and finally up again. Another relaxing exercise is to first look at an object very close to you and then to look into the far distance. Blinking the lids is not an exercise, but a reflex action that happens about once every two minutes. It's designed to distribute the fluid over the eyeballs and to wash them.

About 80 per cent of our daily efficiency is due to our eyes. When you consider how much we depend on good sight in order to cope with everyday activities, it is amazing how careless we are with such

• valuable asset. Industry alone averages

• numerous amount of eye accidents a day. But carelessness about the eyes is not confined to industry. In everyday life, the eyes can be abused in many small i and unnoticeable ways. The following guidelines will enable you to care for your eyes effectively.

Dirt in your eye Dust, grit, small flies, splintered wood or metal getting into your eye is the most common eye problem. The pain caused by a small particle means that you try to remove the offender immediately. And this, plus the fact that the eye will water in an attempt to wash away the particle, is the body's own way of protecting the eye. Use a wisp of clean cotton wool or the corner of a clean handkerchief to remove the particle from the eye. If, however, the particle is wedged under the upper eyelid, pull the lid outwards and downwards. Usually the particle is then carried out onto the lower lashes. If the particle is firmly stuck to the eye surface, don't rub the eye or try to remove it yourself. See a doctor quickly. If you don't, a small scratch can lead to inflammation or keratitis, inflammation of the cornea.

Lighting The eye automatically adjusts to different fighting as part of its natural function, but like everything else, it benefits from a little help. Don't read or write in a poor light, or bright sunlight, either, as this can cause dazzle and glare. Artificial lighting should be directed from behind and glancing down over the left shoulder (or right, if you are lefthanded). It should not shine straight into your eyes. If a centre light is not sufficient, try adding a couple of lamps to the room. Remember, the size of the lamps required depends on the size of the room and the colour scheme. Light coloured walls reflect light and dark walls absorb light. Staircases, in particular, should be well lit, especially if they are used by an elderly person who will need extra light to compensate for deteriorating vision.

Sunlight can cause eyestress, making you tired, nervous and with a headache. So help the eyes by wearing a really good pair of polarized sun glasses. These will reduce glare reflected from flat surfaces such as sand, water and glossy magazine pages. Good sunglasses should filter out all but from about 19 to 30 per cent of the sunlight. Never stare directly at the sun because the ultraviolet rays can burn the cornea of the eye.
