Wash the surrounding skin with warm water containing a little antiseptic and make sure you use clean cotton wool. The person who is removing the splinter should also wash his or her hands in plenty of hot water. Use a fine, sharp needle as a probe but first sterilize it over a flame. When the splinter is removed make sure all the pieces are out, bathe the skin carefully, apply antiseptic ointment and cover with a clean dressing. Watch the wound for any indication that some foreign body is still present in the flesh puffiness, excessive redness or weeping' and see your doctor.
