Can the implants be used in other ways?

The signs of aging around the mouth are cosmetically annoying to many women. Collagen is used to add definition to the fading borders of the lips and to soften the fine lines around the mouth. The implant material is injected along the vermilion borders of the upper and lower lips and into any deep furrows extending out from the lip. Women delight in the fact that their lipstick no longer bleeds into the wrinkles around their mouth. However, collagen implants must be repeated to maintain their effectiveness. For a more permanent solution, laser resurfacing should be considered.

Large well defined lips are also one of todays signatures of beauty and this same technique is used to augment the lips of women of all ages. To add further definition to the heart shaped area of the upper lip, known as the Cupid's Bow, the collagen is injected into the vertical ridges between the upper lip and the nose.

Some cosmetic surgeons may also inject collagen into the red fleshy part of the lips to plump them up. The risk of hitting a small blood vessel exists and if this should happen, crusting and loss of some lip tissue may occur. It is for this reason except in exceptional in circumstances, implants are best limited to the outline of the lip.
