Keeping Your Senses Sharp

There are two fundamental facts that life teaches us as we age: The dosage information on cough syrup bottles is entirely too small to read, and teenagers mumble so much that you can never understand them.

Either that or our eyesight and hearing are starting to go.

Keen eyesight and precise hearing are important to us our senses, after all, are our links to the world around us as we beautify our homes, clarify our career goals, pursue interests that we may not have had time for during our twenties, and watch our children grow toward adulthood.

So it makes good sense to keep our senses sharp and youthful.

Hear Ye, Hear Ye

How old were you when you went to your first amp shaking, rip roaring rock concert? How often have you been startled by a blast of volume when you slipped on your headphones at the start of your daily walk or jog? Can you count the times you've had to raise your voice to converse with a friend in city traffic?

As we go about our twenty first century lives, the tiny cells in our inner ears take a daily battering from amplified sound waves. Add the racket from snowblowers or lawn mowers on the weekends to the relentless engine revs and brake screeches of city streets, and the "Sounds of Silence" that Simon and Garfunkel once popularized seem like pure nostalgia.

But even before life got so loud, our ears didn't necessarily age gracefully. Age related hearing loss is quite literally an age old problem. It just happens to be one that we think won't ever happen to us.

Perhaps that's why women rarely come on their own volition to see John W. House, M.D., president of the renowned House Ear Institute In Los Angeles.

"Quite frankly, it's usually the husband or the partner who makes an issue of hearing loss. He'll have been saying, 'You know, I don't think your hearing is as good as it used to be,"' Dr. House says. She tags along reluctantly, hoping to prove him wrong.

It's very tempting to pretend it's not happening.
