Incision and drainage, or the opening up and draining of inflamed cysts and
abscesses, is another important type of acne surgery. If performed early, before
too much damage has occurred, incision and drainage procedures can speed healing
and reduce the risk of scarring. If done correctly, both types of acne surgery
comedo extraction and incision and drainage-should cause only minimal discomfort
and result in no scarring.
Cystic lesions and abscesses may also be treated by the use of therapeutic (intralesional)
injections. Therapeutic injections consist of instilling a small amount of an
anti-inflammatory medication directly into deep cysts or abscesses in order to
reduce inflammation and possible scar formation. Such injections can be used
alone or in combination with incision and drainage, depending upon the specific
circumstances. Since the medication is injected exactly where it is most needed,
little is required and almost none is absorbed into the rest of the body.
Following injection, cysts and abscesses usually go down within twelve to
forty-eight hours. As a rule, if you develop acne cysts or abscesses, you should
see your dermatologist as soon as possible. The longer that you permit large,
inflamed cysts to remain before seeking proper treatment, the greater your risk
of developing permanent scars.
