The Perfect Cleanser

The skin care industry spends millions trying to convince us that their products hold the secret to smooth, line free skin. Dermatologists say, "Bah!"

"I'm a big fan of simple, basic skin care," says Dr. Franks. "All you need is a gentle cleanser and a moisturizer." The mini guide below can steer you toward cleansers that work best for your skin.

As mentioned earlier, the skin's oil glands produce less oil as we age. The right cleanser washes away dirt and makeup but leaves oil where it belongs on your face.

If you're dry, go creamy. "The drier your skin, the more gentle your cleanser should be," says Dr. Fusco. She suggests Oil of Olay Foaming Face Wash or Cetaphil. Cetaphil is a soap free cleanser that's free of skin irritating fragrances, additives, and preservatives.

Dissolve away oil. Oily skin tends to be thick, so it can tolerate a stronger cleanser. Try an oil binding liquid cleanser formulated for oily skin, such as Neutrogena 0il Free Acne Wash, a cleanser with salicylic acid. If you prefer a bar cleanser, try Neutrogena Oily Skin Formula Facial Cleansing Bar, suggests Dr. Fusco. Or try a gel cleanser formulated for oily skin.

If you're sensitive, pick a kinder, gentler cleanser. Try Cetaphil, says Dr. Fusco. Dermatologists often recommend this product for people with sensitive skin. If not, pick a cleanser such as Almay that's labeled hypoallergenic, meaning that it contains fewer ingredients than regular products and few or none of the ingredients known to cause allergic reactions.

Cleanse correctly. The way you cleanse your skin is just as important as the product you use, says Dr. Fusco. Here's the correct way to wash your face. If you're using a liquid, lotion, or gel cleanser, place about a teaspoon of cleanser in the palm of your hand. Massage it gently into your skin using the balls of your fingers. Rinse your face with warm water until all the cleanser is removed (about five or six times) or wipe off the cleanser with a soft, damp washcloth. If you're using a bar cleanser, hold it under water to wet it, then work up a lather in the palm of your hand. Using the balls of your fingers, massage your face in a circular motion for 30 seconds, then rinse, as above. Pat skin dry never rub it.

Avoid scrubbing grains or pads. "Prolonged exfoliation can actually make the skin become drier and accent fine lines," says Dr. Fusco. Enough said.
