Diet Food
The cleaner and more natural our diets, the more nutrients our cells get and the more efficiently they are likely to work, says Dr. Giarnpapa. The strategies below can help put your diet into detox.
Eat naked produce. Make an effort to buy organic fruits and vegetables (those grown without these chemicals) whenever you can, says Dr. Goldman. It's easier to find organic produce than it used to be, he says. "Many supermarkets now carry organic fruits and vegetables alongside the commercially grown variety, and some food chains (such as Fresh Fields, Bread and Circus, and Whole Food Markets) carry only organic food." Make sure that you wash organic produce to remove as much bacteria and dirt as possible.
Buy boxed organics. If you can't find organic fruits and vegetables, consider buying other organic products, says Dr. Lieberman. "I buy organic cereal, organic milk, and organic juice and eggs," she says. "If you can get even 20 percent of your diet organic, that's 20 percent less of a toxic burden on your immune system."
Waylay white sugar cravings. When a craving for a slice of coffee ring or another sugary, fatty food strikes, "eat a cold sweet potato," says Dr. Lieberman. "Its natural sweetness may be enough to satisfy your craving for white sugan" If this trick works for you, bake up a mess of them and have them on hand for those times when you get the "craves."
