Pycnogenol

A trademarked supplement derived from the bark of the French maritime pine tree, Pycnogenol (pronounced "Pik NA jenal") contains about 40 bioflavonoids with antioxidant powers. Its active ingredients a class of flavonoids called proanthocyanidins, also found in grape seeds make it a potent antioxidant. Pycnogenol also recycles vitamin C and, indirectly, vitamin E, making them effective again, says Dr. Packer.

How it delays aging: Pycnogenol reduces the risk of heart disease by keeping platelets unstuck so that they can't adhere to artery walls and by keeping LDL cholesterol from oxidizing, says Dr. Packer.

Pycnogenol also strengthens the body's smallest blood vessels, ca lled capillaries, and prevents free radical damage to blood vessels. Pycnogenol also suppresses the overproduction of nitric oxide (NO) by immune system cells, which has been linked to rheumatoid arthritis and Alzheimer's disease, says Dr. Packer.

What you'll find. Pycnogenol comes in tablets or capsules, in dosages from 20 milligrams to 100 milligrams.

How much to take: The generally recommended dose is from 50 to 100 milligrams per day, says Dr. Packer.
