Special Problems of Aging Skin

As if coping with laugh lines and crow's feet wasn't enough, we also have to deal with other age related skin problems, from puffy eyes to large pores. But take heart. Here's what experts suggest you can do on your own to brighten, tighten, or just plain hide these bothersome flaws.

To shrink puffy eyes: Believe it or not, some women use the hemorrhoid product Preparation H. This product contains hydrocortisone, a topical steroid that reduces inflammation, says Dr. Jaliman. Does it really send eye bags packing? "My clients say it does," she says, "but the tightening effect is temporary." Be warned that longterm use can thin the skin and lead to acne, premature wrinkling, and broken blood vessels. Consult your physician before using this product around your eyes. If daubing hemorrhoid cream under your eyes sounds less than appealing, reduce eye baggage with more conventional tactics, says Dr. Jaliman. Sleep with your head elevated so that fluid doesn't pool under your eyes. Reduce your intake of salt, which encourages fluid retention. Or keep a stash of teaspoons in the freezer and place them over your eyes when you wake up with puffs. The cold metal will reduce the swelling.

To brighten sallow skin: Ask a dermatologist about glycolic acid, suggests Sheryl Clark, M.D., a dermatologist in New York City. This alpha hydroxy acid (AHA), derived from sugarcane, removes dead, complexiondulling cells from the skin's top layer, revealing the new, fresh skin beneath. And you can see results in as little as 2 weeks. You can obtain glycolic acid through your dermatologist. Over the counter formulations often are too low in concentration to be effective.

To hide spider veins or broken capillaries: These fine red lines that squiggle across the cheeks or nose can be removed with either a laser or an electric needle, says Dr. Jahman. It's easier just to conceal them with makeup.

To minimize large pores. Use porecleansing strips, like Biore or Pond's, on your nose, forehead, chin, or cheeks, suggests Dr. Fusco. "Dirt dilates pores," she says. "If they're not all plugged up with gunk, they'll look smaller." While these products are safe and effective, don't use them more than once every 2 weeks.

Astringents and clay masks can also temporarily minimize pores, says Dr. Fusco. The skin temporarily plumps up, which makes pores appear smaller. Use this trick only on special occasions, however. "Overuse of these products can leave skin tight, dry, and flaky," she says.

To discourage frown lines: Place a piece of waterproof cloth tape across your forehead before bed, suggests Dr. Jaliman. "The tape will keep you from frowning in your sleep, which will prevent some wrinkling." Tape won't prevent crow's feet, however. "You don't scrunch your eyes when you sleep," she says.
