Sunscreen to the Rescue

Wouldn't it be great if there was a miracle product that could protect skin from the sun's assault? That could actually prevent sun induced wrinkles?
There is. It's called sunscreen.

Think of sunscreen as Armor All for your skin. No matter what your age, slathering on sunscreen right now can help prevent future sun damage, say dermatologists.

It may also fend off the formation of wrinkles. "It takes years of sun exposure to make wrinkles, but the skin is damaged before wrinkles actually appear," says Dr. Franks. "By using sunscreen now and turning off the ongoing assault, you can delay or even prevent wrinkles."

There are two types of sunscreens. Physical blocks, the first type, contain zinc oxide or titanium dioxide and act as a force field, literally blocking UVA and UVB rays from reaching the skin. Zinc oxide that pasty white stuff lifeguards used to slather on their lips and noses is the more powerful of the two.

Thankfully, it's now possible to reap the benefits of zinc oxide without looking as though you just came from a Halloween party. Nowadays, most nonprescription physical blocks, which are available at a dermatologist's office, contain zinc oxide that has been micronized (that is, crushed into virtually invisible particles). You can also check on the Internet for these products, since they aren't commonly available in stores. Chemical sunscreens, the second type, contain specific chemicals that absorb both UVA and UVB rays. Avobenzone, also known as Parsol 1789, is one of the most widely used and most effective chemical sunscreens, notes Dr. Franks.

But using sunscreen alone can't keep the sun from aging your skin if you insist on starting and finishing the latest 300 page bestseller while you bake on the beach. "Even the best sunscreens allow some UV rays to penetrate the skin," says Dr. Fusco.
