Is tretinoin safe?

Tretinoin is safe. It has also been approved by the FDA in the United States as an effective means of treating wrinkles. Because it is classified as a drug it must be prescribed and monitored by an informed medical practitioner.

Mild to severe dryness of the skin may occur, especially in the early stages of use. This can be controlled by a gradual increase in concentration or by using moisturizers in conjunction with higher doses.

Redness and irritation, as well as itching, burning, and tingling sensations have also been reported. These tend to occur when the skin has sloughed off its dry layer and is producing new skin cells. If much discomfort is experienced, the dosage may be reduced and an anti inflammatory agent, such as a mild cortisone salve, may be applied.

Since tretinoin intensifies the susceptibility to sunburn, sunscreens must be used. In fact, sunscreens should be a part of the daily regimen, as the sun is a major cause of wrinkling and skin cancers.

Although, at this point in time, there is no documented reason why pregnant women should not use tretinoin, it is probably better to be on the safe side and avoid its use until the baby is born.
