Using Retin A and Renova
Retin A and Renova are drugs. So don't apply more than indicated, and don't use them more frequently than your dermatologist recommends. Also, don't use Retin A or Renova if you are pregnant. To get the most anti aging bang for your buck, follow the tips below.
Start now. Retin A and Renova seem to prevent wrinkles more effectively than they erase them. So fill your first prescription before you spy the first crinkle, advises Dr. Fusco. "If you're
35 or 40 and have never worn sunscreen or have
a history of burning and tanning, don't wait for the damage to show," she says.
Slather on sun protection. Every single day, apply a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15 or use an SPF 15 moisturizer or foundation, says Dr. Fusco. Because Retin A and Renova return the skin to its more youthful plumpness, the newer, fresher skin underneath is vulnerable to sun damage.
Soothe irritation right. To reduce temporary redness, flakiness, and irritation, use a hypoallergenic moisturizer with no added fragrances or preservatives, such as Eucerin or Complex 15, suggests Dr. Clark. Or smooth on a dab of overthe counter hydrocortisone cream every other day.
Also, consider taking 800 international units (IU) of vitamin E a day. Preliminary studies suggest that vitamin E may reduce the irritating effects of Retin A and Renova, says Dr. Clark. But be sure to check with your doctor before using amounts higher than 200 IU.
Practice kinder, gentler skin care. While using Retin A or Renova, avoid using astringents or toners with a high alcohol content, products with scrubbing grains, and clay facial masks. Stay out of saunas and steam rooms, too. Since moisture and heat increase. blood flow, they also increase the penetration of medications, which can cause redness. All can further irritate skin, says Dr. Clark.
Double the benefits. Ask your dermatologist about teaming Retin A or Renova with glycolic acid, suggests Dr. Clark. "When they're used together, both seem to be more effective," she says. Generally, you apply the glycolic acid in the morning and the Retin A or Renova before bed.
