Weather Your Workout

Many women use their workouts as a way to take in some scenery. But exercising outdoors brings with it comfort and safety issues. These simple tips will help you weather your workout so that you can enjoy your time in the great outdoors.

Save your skin. Always apply sunscreen to any part of your body that's exposed. This simple habit will help prevent wrinkling and skin cancer, says Grant Anhalt, M.D., acting chief of dermatology at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore. Wear a sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of 15 if you're out in the morning or late afternoon. But switch to an SPF of 30 to 45 if you're out between 10:00 A.M. and 2:00 P.M. for substantial periods of time like if you're shooting 18 holes, fishing, or boating, he says.

Shade your eyes. Eye doctors at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine polled more than 2,500 people on their history of sun exposure. Those who had been in the sun the most had a 57 percent greater likelihood of having a cataract. The best way to protect your peepers; is to wear sunglasses or clear prescription glasses and a wide brimmed hat whenever you exercise outdoors even in the winter when snow causes sun glare, says Dr. Pate.

Follow the dress code. If you bike, walk, or jog during the day, wear bright colors so that drivers can easily spot you. If you work out at night, dawn, or dusk, outfit yourself with some type of reflective gear so that you can be seen from the front and rear. And make sure to sport bright or reflective clothes on rainy and foggy days, too.

Layer it on.If you weather winter workouts, make sure to put on several layers of clothing. That way you can shed layers as needed so that you don't overheat. It may feel frigid outside, but your body temperature will rise as you exercise, and you may get hot, Dr. Duncan explains.

If it's really cold, experts suggest wearing three layers. Use fabrics such as Coolmax, polypropylene, or ThermaStat blends as an inner layer to wick moisture away from the skin. As a middle layer, insulate by trapping a layer of warm air next to your body with fleece, wool, or Bipolar fabric. The outer layer should shield you from weather extremes. Gore Tex, fleece, and wind jackets and pants are all good outer protectors.

Outsmart hay fever. If you find yourself sneezing and rubbing your eyes during allergy season, avoid exercising in the morning or move your workout indoors, suggests Carol Wiggins, M.D., clinical instructor of allergy and immunology at Emory University in Atlanta. During fall and spring hay fever seasons, the pollen count is highest between the hours of 5:00 and 8:00 A.M. and lowest at night.

Slather after laps. Whether you swim indoors or out, slather on a moisturizer after finishing those laps. Swimming washes away the natural lipids in your skin, making it dry and itchy, says Dr. Anhalt. The best time to moisturize is right after getting out of the pool when your skin is still wet. Doing so helps seal in the moisture that's still on your skin. Moisturizing immediately after getting out of the shower will help to further prevent dry skin.
